Talia Coles - Family DepartmentThursday, 22nd July 2010
I am midway though my second seat in the Family Department. During this seat I have been able to see a wide variety of different Family Law Proceedings including Ancillary Relief, Care Proceedings and Non Molestation Orders.
No two days are ever the same, each case is different and every client requires you to think about the individual issues they have raised. There is a great deal of cross over between the different areas of law and so it may be necessary to consider anything from property and land law issues to the ramifications of a criminal conviction.
My experience in this department has taught me that sometimes it is in our clients best interests to try and reach an agreement before Court. An important part of Ancillary Relief is liaising with the other side with the aim of having both parties reach an agreement. I have assisted various fee earners in drafting correspondence and preparing documentation so that an agreement can be reached.
I have worked directly with a child law panel member and been involved in some complex cases involving highly sensitive matters. I have been able to assist Counsel on these matters at Court and supported people through difficult and challenging experiences.
My time in the Family department has been incredibly rewarding. I have had excellent training in Family law and am always supported and guided in everything I do. The whole department works together and everyone is always willing to take the time to answer any question. Regardless of the area of Law I will eventually practice, my time in the Family department has provided me with growing knowledge of the skills necessary to be a successful Solicitor.
